Learning outcomes

Students know and can use the basic techniques of conference interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous interpreting) from Italian into Russian in a wide range of professional settings.

Course contents

The course program includes:

- perfecting consecutive and simultaneous interpreting techniques the classroom by interpreting speeches delivered during real events as well as by interpreting during real conferences organized by the school at different venues. In depth analysis and use of sector-specific languages and choice of the appropriate terminology. Deontology of interpreters.

Teaching methods

Practical interpreting exercises both in simultaneous and consecutive mode with and without notes with authentic texts taken from conferences, audio and video recordings, radio interviews and debates. Students' performances will be recorded and assessed by the teacher and by students. Self-assessment will be also encouraged.

Assessment methods

The aim of the final exam is to test the complete aquisition of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting techniques between Russian and Italian.

The exam is composed by:

- 6-8 minutes consecutive interpreting from Italian into Russian

- 12-16 minutes simultaneous interpreting from Italian into Russian.

The exam will concern Russian area topics and latest news.

The final grade will be the average of marks obtained by the student in the different parts of this exam.

The exam mark may be:

30 - 30 with honours: excellent exam, showing that the student has thoroughly acquired oral language translation skills, complete and accurate rendering into the target language.

27 - 29: above-the-average exam. Complete and accurate rendering of the source language text into the target language. Some imprecisions and/or omissions of secondary aspects only. Rendering in consecutive mode must not be longer than the original speech.

24 - 26: adequate exam, with some problems in language and content management skills, language and register may show inaccuracies but should not undermine the comprehension of the rendering: there can be grammar, syntax and pronunciation mistakes.

21 - 23: sufficiently adequate exam, with evident limitations and incorrect language, content and interaction management. Some of the learning outcomes have not been fully achieved. Grammar, syntax and pronunciation mistakes.

18 -20: barely sufficient exam.
