Learning outcomes

The aim of the workshop is to strengthen students' writing skills by focusing on the logical construction of arguments, effective exposition and argumentation, and by learning the elements of academic writing (quotations and bibliography), in order to create effective and compelling texts - especially short essays and dissertations.

Course contents

The focus is to learn how to write a dissertation/thesis or an academic essay.

Due to the complexity of this objective, different lecturers from the Ravenna department will be involved on the workshop.

Some examples of topics covered:

-The text and the different types of texts
-Preliminary aspects: identifying the objective, the addressee and the context; the notion of adequacy
-The writing process: planning, drafting, revision and techniques for the optimisation of the writing process
-The different levels of text revision
-Linguistic correctness: lexical, syntactic and textual aspects
-Communicative effectiveness: lexical, syntactic and textual choices
-The punctuation system
-Subdivision into paragraphs and the different types of paragraphs
-Argumentative texts: formal and structural characteristics; different argumentative texts; comprehension and production strategies
-Argumentative methods and logical articulation
-Elements of academic writing: quotations and bibliography

(1) Dario Corno, Scrivere e comunicare. La scrittura in lingua italiana in teoria e in pratica, Pearson Education, Milan 2019. [This essay is to focus on the different stages of the writing process, the elements to take into account when producing a text that aims to be effective, the division into paragraphs, and the drafting of paragraphs].
(2) Paola Italia, Scrivere all'università. Manuale pratico con esercizi e antologia di testi, Le Monnier, Florence 2014. [This text is useful to understand what are the formal characteristics of the argumentative text, its structure, the creative process, the writing of thesis, the editorial rules typical of a scientific text, such as quotations and bibliography].


For students who are unable to attend at least two-thirds of the workshop, the following additional text is recommended:

Teaching methods

Because of the practical nature of the workshop, attendance is compulsory. Lectures characterised by a strong interactive approach will alternate with writing, re-writing/copyediting, analysis and collective discussion of texts.

The workshop will be held in the Ravenna department (for students of the fourth year of the Master's degree) and will consist of 6 3-hour lectures. It will take place in the first teaching semester.

Assessment methods

In order to achieve the qualification, students will be required to produce a short argumentative and documented text, which will be assessed on the basis of linguistic correctness, argumentative soundness, communicative effectiveness and editorial suitability.
