Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will acquire the principles used for the critical evaluation and interpretation of some clinical laboratory methods.

Course contents

A brief history of the cardiovascular system; short survey on the microanatomy of the cardiovascular system: arteries, veins and capillaries. Vascular-wall: structure, function and cells. Vascular-wall stem cells. Isolation protocols. Mechanical and enzymatic methods. Cell culture. Characteristics of cell growth in culture. Culture media. Instrumentation. 3D  cultures. Methods for the morphological and phenotipic characterization. Blood count exam. Immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Main vascular cell immunophenotypic profiles. Cluster of Differentation. Cell riprogramming. iPSCs.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 2 CFU: frontal teaching, video and correlated mini papers from JOVE repository.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of the oral presentation of two questions on the program's topics.
For each question, the student receives a vote based on the demonstrated ability to briefly expose the issues with some critical thinking. The weighted result, expressed in 30/30, contributes in proportion to the number of credits, the final vote of the entire integrated course.
