65299 - Road Infrastructures Design

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture and Building Engineering (cod. 0940)

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student has basic knowledge of geometric components and regulations for the design of roads. He is able to organize an infrastructure project and to independently meet some practical applications: cost analysis, environmental integration, safety. He knows the fundamental elements of the pavements and related materials. Finally, is able to deal with issues related to the design, control and management of road pavements and earthworks for transport infrastructure.

Course contents

Road design

Road project design: fundamentals of road capacity, design flows, levels of service and cross section selection. Road geometry: cartographic support choice, plan alignment and circular and transition curves, vertical alignment, definition of the type sections, cross sections drawing and volume calculations. Works quantification and project cost estimating. Vehicle motion and stability on road curves. Road safety and restraint systems.

Retaining walls

Road embankments and cuts construction. Soil compaction and quality control. Stability analysis: calculation criteria and limit state method. Embankments construction. Earth pressures. Determination of earth pressure in special cases: cohesive soils, water pressure, layered soils and distributed surcharge load on the soil surface. Types of retaining walls. Construction schemes and phases.

Road pavements

Characterization of road materials (soil and aggregate mixtures, bituminous binders, bituminous mixtures). The volumetric mix design of bituminous mixtures. Road pavements materials. Road Pavements design. Geosynthetics. Structural and functional characteristics of pavements. Road pavement maintenance.

Teaching methods

Lessons and team (2-3 students) works. A digital terrain model is assigned and the students design a small road project, also by CAD.

Assessment methods

Oral exam.

Teaching tools

Lectures will be given with ppt slides.
