Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of methods and techniques for the production, storage and restoration of sound. At the end of the course the student is able to recognize the characteristics of the different sound supports, correctly use operating protocols for the acquisition and storage of sound recordings in digital format and has basic knowledge for the restoration of sound.

Course contents

Basic knowledge of computer science, information systems and databases; basic knowledge of musical acoustics; methods and techniques for digitizing and archiving sound recordings.

The bibliography is the same for attending and non-attending students. Non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher to receive instructions on exam preparation.

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical exercises in Music Laboratory.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral interview to assess the student's critical and methodological skills. Students (attending and otherwise) must present an individual exercise consisting in the acquisition in digital format of an analogical recording of short duration, of their choice, accompanied by a form containing the following information: description of the analogical support and bibliographical information on the source; analytical description of the instrumentation used; analytical description of the methods used for the acquisition and processing of the sound recording. The exercise can be done with your own instrumentation or at the Music Laboratory. During the interview there will be practical tests for the acquisition and processing of sound recordings with the instrumentation of the Music Laboratory.

The final assessment will be based on the following indications: insufficient grade in case of lack of basic knowledge and inability to produce a correct interpretation of the course topics; sufficient vote in case of possession of basic knowledge and mainly correct interpretation, but carried out with terminological imprecision; good grade in case of possession of intermediate level knowledge and fully correct but not always precise interpretation; excellent grade in case of possession of high level knowledge, interpretation of problems not only correct but carried out with precision and excellent oral expression skills.
