Learning outcomes

The laboratory allows the student to acquire, also through practical examples, skills and notions on methods and practices for defining a European project and the tools that compose it. These include: analysis of the feasibility, sustainability of the intervention, analysis of the financing, management models of the project and its action in terms of communication.

Course contents

The course aims to provide students with a methodological background for the design and management of projects financed with European funds.

The first part of the course will introduce the most important EU programs on interregional cooperation: Interreg Europe, MED - Mediterranean development program, CE - Central European cooperation program, Adrion - Adriatic and Ionian cooperation.

A specific part of the course will be dedicated to the presentation of the most significant programs for European urban cooperation: Urbact and UIA Urban Innovative Actions.

Finally, will be examined some European strategic programs in the field of research (Horizon Europe) and the environment (Life).

The second part of the course will introduce the main tools and procedures for the design, elaboration and management of European projects and transnational local development projects. Students will thus become familiar with the main tools for the definition and presentation of a project proposal to be carried out with the financial support of the European Union. The following documents will be examined:

- European calls

- Program manuals

- Local action plans

- Communication plans

- Guidelines for the involvement of skakeholders and strategic actors for local development.

During the course, students will prepare, individually or in small groups, the outline of a European project to be presented for funding (aims, objectives, work phases, main outputs and materials, tools for assessing the results achieved, budget of the activities) .

At the end of the course, students will get to know

- the main design methodologies,
- the types of European programs for interregional cooperation,
- the management and implementation processes of a European project.
In this way the participants will acquire the useful skills to build a European partnership and to effectively carry out the actions and operational activities envisaged at the project level.

Teaching methods

Discussion, presentation of cases, exercises and simulations. Online platforms and technical documentation will be used for the implementation and management of European projects.

Assessment methods

Creation and presentation of a European project outline on a theme to be agreed. Oral verification of the achievement of the learning objectives. During the lectures bibliographical indications and technical documentation useful for the preparation of the project and the final exam will be provided.

The final exam will be divided into two parts. The first part will focus on the presentation of the project carried out in groups by the students and will require the preparation of 10-15 slides. In addition, a 10-15 page report will have to be produced to develop and deepen the themes touched upon in the presentation of the project.

The second part of the exam will be based on the topics illustrated during the course and will be based on the power point presentations and on the technical documentation provided during the lessons.

The oral exam with positive evaluation of the contribution to the group project and knowledge of the topics covered in lectures determines the achievement of the final suitability for laboratory activities.
