90228 - Laboratory of Offshore Sustainable Technologies

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Offshore Engineering (cod. 9249)

Learning outcomes

The students will be provided with an introduction to sustainable technologies applicable in innovative offshore processes, as water desalting, water treatment and natural gas purification.

Course contents

Requirements

The course provides a brief overview on membrane science and membrane engineering, with emphasis on gas separation membranes for oil and gas applications.

A prior knowledge and understanding of basic concepts of process engineering and transport phenomena is required to attend profitably this course.

Contents

Introduction on membrane technology

Basic feature of separation processes in the oil and gas sector relevant for offshore applications. Fundamentals of membrane technologies and basic definitions. Introduction on the most relevant aspects of membranes and membrane processes and their classification. Identification of the relevant parameters and properties for the description of gas transport.

Membranes and modules

Description of the main polymeric membranes and manufacturing techniques. Illustration of technical features of membrane modules in three different geometries: planar, spiral wound, hollow fibers.

Gas separation membrane technologies

Basic principles and applications: gas separation and vapor permeation; membrane vs. conventional processes and identification of advantages/disadvantages. Emerging methods (e.g., facilitated transport). Identification of the major problems in gas separation membrane applications: aging, plasticization, effect of impurities, etc.

Analysis of relevant test cases

Natural gas sweetening, H2S removal, hydrogen purification, air fractionation, biogas upgrading, carbon capture applications.

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching notes and relevant review papers will be uploaded in the UNIBO website “Virtuale”.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars from membrane experts about ongoing research activities.

Assessment methods

Preparation of a written report on a project, assigned by the end of the course, on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of a specific gas separation problem performed by a membrane process.

Teaching tools

Lecture slides.
