Learning outcomes

Basic knowledge of electronic device and circuits for industrial sensor signals acquisition and conditioning.

Fundaments of Power Electronics (linear and switching circuits) for industrial electric drives.

Electrical simulation with Spice and testing with laboratory equipment of conventional industrial electronic devices and circuits.

Course contents

Module 1: Analog Electronics (3 CFU - 30h)

  • Electronic devices
    • pn-junctions and diodes
    • Bipolar and FET transistors: electrical characterization, linear and switching operations, Safe Operating Area
    • Basic stages, small signal analysis
  • Signal acquisition and conditioning
    • DC and AC coupling
    • Operational amplifiers
    • Instrumentation amplifiers
    • Analog filters
    • Comparators
    • Impedance matching

    Module 2: Power Electronics (3 CFU - 30h)

  • Fundamentals of Power Electronics
    • Power transistors, (BJT, FET, IGBT) and driver circuits
    • Amplifier classes
    • AC/DC converters, rectification.
    • Voltage regulators
    • Switchmode systems
    • Inverters (AC/DC)

    Module 3: Lab of Elettronics (3 CFU - 30h)

  • Laboratory classes
    • Numerical simulation of analog circuits based on OPAMPs (e.g. PSIM)
    • Electrical measurements on analog circuits for signal acquisition and conditioning. Application cases.
    • Lab test on switching circuits, rectifiers, voltage regulators, inverters.

Teaching methods

During the course, the structure and the operating principles of different analog and power electronic circuits for industrial applications will be studied by complementing the theoretical lessons with numerical design examples and laboratory activieties.

Assessment methods

The final test will consist in written and oral examination and on a laboratory project.
