Evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions

Program evaluation: reasons and difficulties.

Is it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention that is complex and often subject to the influence of many external factors? Differences between black box and theory-driven approach.

The relationship between design and evaluation and the importance of the theory of change.

Exemples from real experiences on the use of the theory-driven approach to evaluate different interventions in the educational field and exercises in working groups.

Readings/Bibliography

At the beginning of the workshop 1 or 2 papers in English on the theory-driven approach in evaluation will be provided.

On the general topic of evaluation you can refer to:

Dallago, L., Vieno, A., & Santinello, M. (2004). Valutare gli interventi psicosociali. Carocci.

Teaching methods

The workshop will combine lectures, group work (subgroups) and classroom discussions. Each group will be asked to draw up an evaluation proposal referring to a project illustrated by the teacher.

Those interested may propose their own projects to the teacher for classroom practice. In order to do this, it is necessary to talk to the teacher at least three weeks before the start of the workshop, so that she can assess the real possibility of including the work in the planned training programme.

Assessment methods

Assessment will consider individual participation and the product of the group work.
