Learning outcomes
The course will provide fundamentals of intra-vehicle wireless and wired communication systems, and of wireless transmission and network/protocol architectures for the connectivity between the vehicle and the cloud. Understanding of the architecture of satellite positioning systems and the main design principles and performance trade-off.
Course contents
Module 1
Intro to connected and automated vehicles: applications and requirements.
Intro to digital communications system.
Link budget, shadowing and fading.
Thermal noise in communication systems.
Base band digital systems (ISI and equalization). Performance evaluation. Numerical examples.
Band pass modulated systems. Performance in terms of bit error probability and spectral efficiency.
Channel capacity. Concept of channel coding with examples.
Small scale fading. 2-ray model.
MIMO.

Module 2
Intro to the wireless technologies for connected and automated vehicles.
Networks and protocol stack: general overview and V2X.
IEEE 802.11p.
Architecture and principles of cellular networks.
Sidelink C-V2X (sidelink LTE-V2X and 5G-V2X).
Other technologies for V2X (Bluetooth, Lora, ZigBee).
Teaching methods
Most of the lectures will be in the room, some of them with the aid of slides that will be shared with the students.
Laboratory activities with software simulations will also be organized.
Assessment methods
The exam includes a written and an oral part, both covering both modules.
