Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student understands the concept of information and knows the methods of digital representation and the systems of automatic data processing in the field of humanities; he/she possesses theoretical knowledge, methodological skills and techniques to represent and process humanistic data.

Course contents

The course will introduce students to the principles underlying the production of digital objects in the humanistic field, with special attention to the world of the Web. In particular, the student will acquire skills related to the complex process of conceiving, designing and creating a digital resource, by choosing the most appropriate tools and languages with respect to the ideal model to be created and the reference domain (publishing, cultural heritage [archives, libraries, museums and galleries, text editions], commissioned projects, entertainment, etc.).

Readings/Bibliography

The reference manual is: F. Tomasi, Metodologie informatiche e discipline umanistiche, Carocci, Roma 2008. The reading of the book is suggested BEFORE the starting of the classes.

Other materials will be available during the course.

Teaching methods

Lessons will be both theoretical and practical, including discussion of online resources and hands-on classes.
The hands-on classes should equip students with the skills needed to develop digital resources in the humanities.

The attendance of this training activity requires the prior participation of all students in on-line training Modules 1, 2 on safety in the workplace.

Assessment methods

The student must develop (individually or in group) a website and document her/his work in two specific documents, namely:

  • the Project Management Plan
  • the Communication Strategy Plan

The website MUST be published before the date of the examination. The student will present and discuss her/his project and the developed website.

Teaching tools

Classes will be held remotely and/or in equipped rooms with desktop computers and will work in groups during the hands-on classes (if applicable when the course kicks off).
