  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 8887)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired experience on specific aspects of inorganic and organic chemistry, has also acquired the minimal knowledge to operate safely in a chemical laboratory, and has ability to conduct experiments and analyze and interpret the data.

Course contents

The basic knowledge of fundamental chemistry are necessary to attend with profit this course.

Fluent spoken and written italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in italian.

The chemistry lab course is based upon practical experiments, during which it will be teached how to use some of the most simple and common laboratory techniques, for example:
-volumetric analysis;
-chromatographic techniques;
-synthesis, purification and characterization of organic substances.
In particular, the following experiences will be proposed:
-qualitative analysis for the determination of organic functional groups;
-complessometric titration;
-synthesis of aspirin, purification and characterization;
-synthesis of nylon 6,6;

-synthesis of biodiesel;

-separation and purification by chromatographic techniques.

Readings/Bibliography

The book suggested by the course Organic Chemisty contains most of the topics covered during the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, during which the topics in the program are presented. Six laboratory experiments with mandatory minimum frequency of at least four experiments.

Teaching methods may require modification due to possible pandemic reasons.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the carrying out of all students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio] and participation in module 3, related to the specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the appropriate section of the course of study website.

Assessment methods

Oral examination based upon written reports on laboratory experiments.

Teaching tools

Notes of the lessons and reports on laboratory experiments are available at the web site: https://virtuale.unibo.it/

Students must bring with them such material during laboratory exercises.
