  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 8887)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will acquire experience on specific aspects of inorganic and organic chemistry, furthermore, the student will acquire basic knowledge to operate safely in a chemical laboratory, and will have the ability to conduct experiments, analyze and interpret the data obtained.

Course contents

Basic knowledge of fundamental chemistry are required to attend with profit this course.

Fluent spoken and written Italian is a mandatory requirement: all lectures, tutorials and study material will be in Italian.

The chemistry lab course is based upon practical experiments, during which it will be taught how to use some of the most common techniques, such as:
· qualitative analysis
· chromatographic techniques
· synthesis, purification and characterization of organic substances
in particular the following experiences will be proposed:
· qualitative analysis for the determination of organic functional groups(double bonds, alcohols, glycosidic and peptidic bonds;
· complessometric titration
· synthesis of aspirin, and their purification and characterization
· synthesis of nylon 6,6

synthesis of bio-diesel

· separation and purification by chromatographic techniques

Readings/Bibliography

The book suggested by the course Organic Chemisty contains most of the topics covered during the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures focused on the topics of the program. Six laboratory experiences with a minimum of four experiments.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the carrying out of all students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio] and participation in module 3, related to the specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the appropriate section of the course of study website.

Variations may occur depending on the evolution of the general health emergency

Assessment methods

Oral examination based upon written reports on laboratory experiments.

Teaching tools

Notes of the lessons and reports on laboratory experiments are available at the web site: https://iol.unibo.it/

Students must bring with them such material during laboratory exercises.
