Learning outcomes

The module explores the theoretical, methodological and applicative aspects of the semiotic discipline, following the work of the module Methodologies of Analysis (1). 

Course contents

The module deepens the knowledge of semiotic methodological tools, through the concept of textuality and the question of its boundaries. Assuming basic knowledge developed in Methodologies of Analysis (1), this advanced course will focus particularly on aesthetic texts, including various fields such as: music, visual arts, design, fashion. At the same time, the topic of intersemiotic translation between languages will also be addressed. The module will also take advantage of the of semiotic field scholars contribution, through a cycle of lectures about classical topics, as well as on recent developments. Lectures issues will be introduced and deepened in class, with students active contribution.

Readings/Bibliography

The course will be developed in a workshop mode, with a large number of lectures held by scholars of the semiotic field.

A list of basic texts will introduce specific paths for each area (music, visual arts, design, fashion, intersemiotic translation) that will be addressed.

Studying two books of a single subject will be a necessary condition to take the exam (paper or case history) and may possibly be integrated with other texts, possibly proposed by speakers.

Teaching methods

The module includes lectures that will also have the task of preceding and supporting external scholars talks (in presence or online, as needed).

Talks cycle also involves active participation of students who will be able assuming the role of discussant; that is, deepening in advance topics addressed in the lessons, talking and asking questions to the speakers.

Assessment methods

An evaluation can be obtained through two different but equivalent methods:

- a paper strictly linked to a lecture of an external speaker, developing and deepening the introduced issue, to be finally discussed in an oral interview. The paper can also be associated with the role of discussant covered during the scholar's talk.

- a short essay on a case study (individual, or collective with groups of max 4), developed apart from external speakers talks, focused on an issue related to the subjects addressed during the module, to be finally discussed in an interview.

 

More details about writings editing rules will be provided at the beginning of the classes.

This module does not provide different assessments for attending and non-attending students.

Teaching tools

During the lectures, multimedia and digital equipment (PCs, audiovisuals, projectors, online teaching platforms) will be used according to the teaching needs.
