Learning outcomes

At the end of the training period, the student knows the procedures and criteria (related to different species and situations) to perform clinical, instrumental and lab pregnancy diagnosis, and to monitor it in physiological and pathological conditions, both of maternal and fetal origins. The student knows the physiology and the assistance at an eutocic delivery, the obstetric manual skills in case of dystocia, and the main pathologies of pueperium and the neonatal cares, for healthy or sick neonates. The student is able to diagnose the main congenital and acquired pathologies of male and female reproductive tract causing low fertility or infertility and the medical or surgical therapeutics protocols. The student acquire the criteria for planning and apply artificial insemination, including semen evaluation.


Course contents

Students will follow clinical cases of obstetric/gynaecological/andrological interest and will take care of the neonates referred to the University Veterinary Hospital of the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences. They will learn the compilation of medical records and anamnesis, performing a clinical exam in male and female with differential diagnosis, performing of basic reproductive procedures, and the principles of the Neonatal Intensive Therapy.

Teaching methods

The student will follow the teacher in the daily clinical activity on referred animals or on animals housed at affiliated clinics/farms, and the veterinarians of the University Veterinary Hospital during the treatment of hospitalized animals.

Student must wear white coat or green and accident prevention shoes during activities with large animals. When necessary, DPI (ex. gloves, disposable coats and boot covers, etc.) will be provided.

Clinical activity will be completed by sessions of discussion of clinical cases.


Assessment methods

Attendance to the training in Animal Reproduction will be evaluated through the verification of signatures on the form provided by the staff of the Service during the training period.

The acquisition of skills and competencies will be evaluated by the staff of the Service during the training activities. The staff confirms the acquisition of such skills by putting the signature in the form. The teacher in charge of the training will verify that all the required skills are acquired.
