34337 - Training in General Pathology

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in School of Dentistry (cod. 8204)

Learning outcomes

Students will practice with the use of the microscope and will learn the fundamentals of histopathology. The aim of this course is enabling them in recognizing the microscopic alterations caused in cells and tissues by the pathologic processes.

Course contents

The pathologic conditions already discussed in the General Pathology course will be examined again, in order to display the morphologic changes caused by them in tissues. Students will observe:

the simplest cell degeneration processes (vacuolar and fatty changes);

the histologic features of acute and chronic inflammatory reaction;

the different characteristics of necrosis and tissue repair;

the alterations caused by atherosclerosis and thrombosis;

examples of epithelial and mesenchymal neoplastic lesions.

Readings/Bibliography

Students can examine the lab slides on a dedicated web site:
http://virtualmicroscopy.patologia-sperimentale.unibo.it/

Teaching methods

Histological slides will be observed in digital format, from:

http://virtualmicroscopy.patologia-sperimentale.unibo.it/

The teacher will explain in detail the features of the pathologic conditions to be examined during each laboratory class.

Assessment methods

The final exam will consist in the description of a histological slide. It will be aimed at verifying  the student's ability to recognize the main morphological alterations caused in cells and tissues by the pathologic processesdescribed during the laboratory course.

The final grade of the General Pathology course is the average of the grades obtained in the tests of General Pathology and Laboratory of General Pathology.

Teaching tools

Students will attend the histopathology laboratory located at the General Pathology Institute. This laboratory is equipped with a video-projector and workstations with connection to the electricity grid and wifi internet.
