Course contents

Reading and Translating Middle High German

In this course we will be dealing with the Middle High German language in order to learn how to read from a manuscript, to transcribe from it and finally to translate the text into Italian. The first lesson will be dedicated to the Middle High German grammar; afterwards, we will concentrate on paleography and start to transcribe from a codex and translate the text. The course will enable students to work on a medieval text in a direct way and will give them the possibility to practice on translation.

Readings/Bibliography

- Text uploaded online on the website of the course.

- Wegere, K.P. / Schultz-Balluff, S. / Barts, N., Mittelhochdeutsch als fremde Sprache, Erich Schmidt Verlag, 2019.

Non-attending students have to contact Prof. Bertagnolli in order to define an exam bibliography.

Teaching methods

The course will be structured as a seminar. From the very beginning, we will translate from Middle High German, dividing the class into little working groups. The teacher will follow every group and help in case of difficulties. I suggest to attend classes with a laptop, tablet or mobile in order to have access to online dictionaries.

You are strongly recommended to attend and actively participate in all of your classes as this is a key learning component of the course.

Assessment methods

There will be a written exam with a short transcription and a short translation from Middle High German into Italian.
