Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired a deeper knowledge of Russian literature, taking into account various issues related to its division into periods, different literary schools and movements as well as the main critical interpretations and thematic approaches. A particular attention will be given to the general historical and cultural context of the epoch. He / She will have developed methodological and linguistic tools for literary texts analysis and interpretation.

Course contents

RUSSIAN LITERATURE: “THAW” AND “STAGNATION”

1. After a short historical and cultural introduction to the period 1953-1991, the students will be given critical analysis of some works of authors whose literary activity unfolds mainly during the period of the so called Thaw and Stagnation.

2. Students will also be introduced to the issues arising in the field of literary translation. The most significant translation cases will be discussed and existing translations will be compared. Students will be required to translate, with the help of the teacher, some texts from Russian into Italian, making appropriate use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.

Teaching methods

The lectures will be held in presence with the possibility to follow online on Microsoft TEAMS.

Due to the Covid-19 emergency, rooms cannot be used to their full capacity.

Further details will be given at the beginning of the course.

Assessment methods

The test consists in an oral exam which has the aim of evaluating the critical and methodological ability of the students.

At the beginning of the exam the student will present the list of the books he intends to discuss.

The student will be asked to answer questions concerning each part of the programme: 1. readings for historical, literary and traductological background; 2. material provided by the teacher; 3. readings for individual study.

Those students who are able to demonstrate a wide and systematic understanding of the issues covered during the lessons, are able to use these critically and who master the field-specific language of the discipline will be given a mark of excellence (27-30 cum laude).

Those students who demonstrate a mnemonic knowledge of the subject with a more superficial analytical ability and ability to synthesize, a correct command of the language but not always appropriate, will be given a ‘fair’ mark (23-26).

A superficial knowledge and understanding of the material, a scarce analytical and expressive ability that is not always appropriate will be rewarded with a pass mark or just above a pass mark (18-22).

Students who demonstrate gaps in their knowledge of the subject matter, inappropriate language use, lack of familiarity with the literature in the programme bibliography will not be given a pass mark.
