Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at offering a general overview of EU law. More precisely, the objective is to provide the students with the necessary tools for a full understanding of the complex mechanisms that govern its functioning. The students will be able to critically analyse EU acts and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, understand the relevant legal issues, represent them orally and interact with the other classmates.

Course contents

The programme will cover the following topics: the European integration process; the structure, objectives and fundamental values of the European Union; the institutional framework, the sources of law, the impact on national legal orders; the EU citizenship, the Economic and Monetary Union, the EU Internal Market and the Area of Freedom Security and Justice; the external relations of the EU.

Teaching methods

The course will be highly interactive. Theoretical issues will be confronted with practical cases in order to allow the students to understand and verify how EU law is actually implemented. Moreover, students will occasionally be asked to prepare in advance judgments or other reading material uploaded on the professor's web site in due time.

The course will follow the simple alternate mode illustrated here.

Assessment methods

The (attending) students' learning will be constantly verified through discussions and debates. The final exam will be oral (for attending and not attending students). The questions posed by the examining commission will regard the topics indicated in the Section “Course contents” (most notably, at least one question on the intitutional part and one on the substantive part). For the preparation of the exam students can refer to the text books indicated in the Section “Readings/Bibliography”. No additional teaching material will be required in order to pass the exam.

The course will take place during the first semester and students may therefore sit for the exam starting from January.
