Learning outcomes

Recognize the psychological and social aspects of malignnt diseases. Appreciate the emotional impact of cancer on patients and their families. Recognize the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and how it affects the treatment of a disease.

Course contents

- The role of clinical psychology in the management and clinical care of cancer patients and families;

- The importance of screening, diagnosis and treatment of psychological distress and other clinical and subclinical psychological disturbances in cancer patients;

- Relatives’ burden and the psychosocial impact of cancer on interpersonal relationships;

- Approaches to patient-centered communication in cancer care.

Teaching methods

The Clinical Psychology of Cancer Care course consist of 1 CFU of 8 hours of lectures supported by slides and a small-groups, in-class activity “Approaches to Patient – Centered Communication in Cancer Care in Practice”.

Assessment methods

Multiple choice questions (nr. 5) will be used to assess students’ knowledge, in a 15-minute test.
