Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student has the necessary tools to utilize demographic data and the knowledge of demographic techniques to analyze economic behavior. In particular, the student is able to: - apply information and demographic methods to non-human populations - critically use the demographic-social information proposed by international organizations - interpret consumer behavior through the use of demographic methods

Course contents

The course is subdivided into two modules:

Module 1

- International data sources of demographic and socio-economic data.

- Theories on the relationship between demographic trends and development.

- The impact of demographic trends (fall in birth rate, ageing population, immigration) on economy (consumer behaviour, labour forces).

- Application of demographic techniques to enterprises and to employees: cohort analysis, life tables, standardization.

Module 2

Poverty measures.

Poverty and inequality in Europe and in Italy. Eurostat, ISTAT and Bank of Italy Surveys.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons; discussion of arguments that the students can deepen.

Assessment methods

The test takes place in oral form and consists of three questions (10/30 every question) regarding the topics covered during the course. Oral examination includes students' work too.
