Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has the knowledge and the ability to understand the objectives reachable through rehabilitation and to learn the tools to achieve them, knowing how to design and execute targeted interventions at satisfying the needs of the person with neurolesion. He also knows and recognizes the main clinical features, which lists the rehabilitation treatment.

Course contents

Spinal Cord Injury: pathological and clinical features, patterns of functioning and disability. Spastic hypertonia.

Severe Acquired Brain Injury: traumatic,injury, clinical features, patterns of disability, disorders of consciousness. Dystonic hypertonia

Stroke: ischemic injury, ischemic penumbra, clinical features, patterns of disability. Disorders of gait after Stroke. The concept of synergy and coordinative structure, alteration of the synergies.

Multiple Sclerosis: demyelinating disease, clinical features, patterns of functioning and disability. Disorders of Balance and postural coordination.

Motor control: historical evolution of assumptions about motion control. Primary and secondary components of changes in the movement after neurolesion.

Recovery after neurolesion: sprouting, plasticity, remyelination. Lesional momentum. Biological factors and environmental factors.

Motor learning after neurolesion: hypothesis about motor learning, motor learning factors, stages of motor learning, intrinsic and extrinsic feedback.

Assessment methods

The examination of the module is aimed at verifying the acquisition of knowledge on the processes of damage and recovery after neurolesion.
The exam consists of an oral exam with three questions on the topics of the program.
It is required the registration on Almaesami.
