Learning outcomes

The successful student is familiar with the laws of physics, including the bases of thermodynamics, electrical forces and magnetism. The student is able to solve simple physical problems.

Course contents

Introduction to physics: mathematical concepts and physical dimensions.

Introduction to instruments and measurements.

Kinematics: principal types of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. Vector properties.

Dynamics: forces. Role of friction: examples of sedimentation and electrophoresis.

Fluid dynamics: diffusion. Work and energy: definitions. Power and metabolism. Kinetinc and potential energy: examples with gravitational, electrostatic and elastic forces.

Thermodynamics: systems and basic principles. Entropy and statistics. Free energy: application to chemical reactions and catalysis.

Electric and magnetic fields. Bioelectromagnetism: action potentials in cells.

Definition of wave: parameters of a wave. Spectrum of electromagnetic field.
