75491 - Wireless Systems Laboratory M

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Telecommunications Engineering (cod. 9205)

Learning outcomes

The aim of Wireless Systems Laboratory is to provide the basics of wireless systems design and performance evaluation. This objective is pursued through laboratory activities that include the development of simulators and the implementation of subsystems in programmable devices. As an application example, the course will refer to wireless communications technologies applied to vehicular scenarios.

Course contents

The course focuses on the design and evaluation of wireless communication systems. This is performed through laboratory activities with the development of simulators and the deployment on hardware following the concept of software define radio. Short range vehicular communications will be used as an example scenario.

The main topics are as follows.
- Simulation: what it means.
- The simulation of telecommunication systems, with particular emphasis on the Physical layer.
- The accuracy of simulations.
- The radio channel.
- The OFDM technology.
- The design and implementation of digital systems on programmable hardware: software defined radios.

Laboratory experiences are carried out through the use of Matlab, Simulink, and programmable hardware (Raspberry Pi); to attend the course, the student is NOT required to have knowledge of these tools in advance.

Assessment methods

In advance to the exam, the student writes a report including all laboratory activities (in any format, including slides or full text with figures). The exam will then include an oral part (with a discussion of the report) and a practical part, with some simple modification to the developed software (objective of the practical part is not to focus on programming skills).

Teaching tools

Software and hardware available in the School laboratories are used during the course. More specifically, the students use Matlab, Simulink, and Raspberry Pi devices.
