Learning outcomes

The student - knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks - is able to apply them to the translation of technical and scientific texts from different genres and text types, from French into Italian, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts - knows the main techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text

Course contents

This module (40 hours) aims at enhancing the students’ translation competence, and building on the knowledge acquired by them during previous translation courses, in order to become autonomous professionals. This module will focus particularly on technical texts in the institutional, legal and financial fields. When tackling specialised texts in these fields, special care will be taken to enhance documentation strategies, and accuracy and reliability of documentation. Moreover, the students will be invited to attend conferences and workshops organised by the Laboratory of Technical Translation, which will tackle specialised areas relevant to the module. CAT and corpus query tools, i.e. IT tools usually used in the profession, will also be introduced and practiced during the course.

5 texts will be proposed for translation for individual ongoing evaluation. These exercises will not be part of the end of module examination, but will serve to provide materials for subsequent analysis in class. The texts will contain terminology and phraseology already analyzed during the course in order to test the students’ level of understanding.

  • Legal and corporate documentation, Accounting (basic accounting terminology)
  • Brochures & product sheets
  • Test reports.

Teaching methods

The module is structured around a series of lectures covering the main theoretical and methodological aspects of translation, as well as extensive hands-on, workshop-like lessons, in which students will use comparable and aligned corpora and specific documentation. Hands-on activities are carried out as part of the group work, so that peer support can complement the lecturers' guidance, in a learner-centred environment.

As specified in the Contents section, special care will be taken to enhance documentation strategies and the accuracy and reliability of documentation. Lessons include the correction of (and reflection on) individual translations carried out as homework. The teacher’s role will be to give the learners appropriate feedback about their progress and about their learning strategies.

The module requires compulsory attendance (70% classroom attendance)

 

Assessment methods

The module will be assessed by a three-hour end of module examination (around 400/500 words in length). Students will be allowed to use the internet for specific web searches, mono and bilingual dictionaries and specialised glossaries. The content of the text will be in relation to the themes examined throughout the course.

The final mark will be the average of all the marks obtained in the Specialized Translation module from French into Italian, and in the Specialized Translation module from Italian into French.

Exam evaluation scale: the mark is scaled from 30 to 18.  depending on the presence of word sense errors, lexical errors, involuted syntax. Assessment criteria are the following: Text comprehension, Syntax, Vocabulary, Expressive output

Depending on the difficulty of the text and on the student's ability to reinvest the knowledge acquired during the course, it will be up to the teacher to attribute a variable weight to the various descriptors mentioned above.

Teaching tools

Both lectures and workshops will take place in computer labs equipped with PCs and projectors. There will be substantial hands-on practice in translation, using CAT tools and revision tasks. Students will be allowed to use monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, as well as online dictionaries, and comparable and aligned corpora. Slides will be used in lectures and then subsequently made available via the Moodle e-learning platform (http://moodle.sslmit.unibo.it/course/view.php?id=734), in Power Point format.
