Learning outcomes

The course offers to student basic elements of Christian and Medieval Architecture and sculptural decoration of some important monasteries and churches through historical, artistic and archaeological studies.

Course contents

The course’s purpose is to offer a basic knowledge of an historic and artistic period between VI and IX century through the presence and the most characteristic features of population like Lombards and Carolingians.

The first part of the course (A) deals with updated history, archaeology and artistic features. The second part (B) deals with architectural and ornamental sculptures in medieval churches focus on iconography and symbols.

SYLLABUS:

A. European Middle Age between Lombards and Carolingians (VI-IX century): archeological and artistic features.

B. Architecture and artistic culture in early medieval Europe: iconography and symbolism.

Books purchasing is useless. Teacher’s lessons will be given in class. The books are available in Archeology library (S. Giovanni in Monte).

Lesson's timetable: from 28 January till 13 March: Monday, Wednesday: 9- 11h, location Aula Capitani; Tuesday 11- 13h, location Aula Gualandi.

From 17 March: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9- 11h, location Aula Capitani.

Teaching methods

Lessons with power point, seminars and study visits.

The attending students will be more easily able to pass the exam.

Assessment methods

Final text consists in oral examination in order to analyze the knowledge of course’s subject.

It will be verified also the critical and methdological attitudes. For the attendants it could be valued additional works about a part of the program choosen together with the professor. It will be assessed the oral exposition and the capacity of treating themes and problems with critical spirit and an appropriate language.

A knowledge by heart and a language not too specific will have a sufficient note otherwise the lack of competence will have a negative one.
