Learning outcomes
We broadly go through 10 topics concerning both the global and the European economic integration. The point of view is MICRO and POLITICAL ECONOMY. The aim is to let students get the basic skill to write reports, take part in discussions and contribute to decisions in international institutions, multinational firms and in other public and private institutions involved in global and European economic integration processes.
Course contents
We shall go through 10 topics outlined below:
1. the two globalizations: differences and similarities
2. classic and neoclassic theories of trade
3. income distribution, trade policies and the political economy of traditional trade
4. migrations, capital mobility, wages and effects on inequality across and within countries
5. the new theories of trade
6. agglomeration and environment
7. free trade areas, custom unions and single market: some comparisons
8. competition, antitrust and antidumping: a trilemma
9. political economy of international economic integration
10. international openness and religion
Readings/Bibliography
Lecture notes-files (in English) will be made available on the website of Unibo and will contain reading references for each topic. Access is restricted to enrolled students.
Teaching methods
The instructor explains the specific issues in a self contained manner using PP files, geometry, mathematics and handy intuition with frequent links to casual observation suggested by media and events occurring in the global economy. A technical support may be provided by the teacher during office hours or during classes. Technicalities will be broadly explained for non experts.
Assessment methods
Attending students: the final grade is based on extra bonuses obtained answering questions during classes, home assignments and a final written test containing simple exercises, open questions and multiple choice questions.
For those not attending classes the exam is based on a verbal discussion.
Teaching tools
The class is based on lessons where the instructor addresses specific issues concerning integration going through Power Point files in English and Italian.
Students acquire new information and interact with the instructor by carrying on short presentations during classes (if classes are not too crowded).
