Learning outcomes

The course is intended to provide students with the most critical issues regarding the psychopathological profile of individuals with metabolic disorders, issues associated with treatments, and their effects on treatment outcomes. The students wit also learn how to integrate their therapeutic intervention with other personnel of the team in order to increase treatment effects.

Course contents

  1. Psychological disturbances in metabolic disease (obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome).
  2. Theory and practice of motivational interviewing
  3. Individual treatment and group sessions
  4. Weight loss interventions and weight maintenance programs
  5. Adherence to dieting and physical activity: similarity and differences in stage of change
  6. Physical activity: measurement, barriers and limits. How to motivate patients to physical activity. Physical activity in metabolic disorders: type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, morbid obesity
  7. The LEARN program for weight control, lifestyle interventions. From Diabetes Prevention Program to LookAHEAD.
  8. Quality of life, health related quality of life: generic and disease-specific questionnaires
  9. Economic and echologic sustainability of diet and lifestyle interventions
  10. eHealth technology in metabolic disorders

Readings/Bibliography

There are no specific textbooks. All textbooks of clinical dietetics include most of the information presented during the course, that is integrated with personal experience in the field.
