Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire the necessary tools to consciously manage the communicative-relational aspects of their future medical profession, favoring the student's attention to the emotional aspects of the relationship with the patient. In particular, the training objectives will be: a) Knowledge and understanding: the student must show knowledge of the main modes of communication and structure and basic functions of the clinical interview. b) Knowledge and understanding skills applied: the student must be able to set up a clinical interview and to use the techniques for collecting information. c) Autonomy of judgment: the student must show that he can integrate the knowledge and manage the complexity of situations of poor compliance or communication of the diagnosis. d) Communication skills: the student must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with the hospitalized patient. e) Ability to learn: the student must develop skills that enable him to continue his training on these topics once the course is completed.

Course contents

The clinical interview in the health sector: the structure of the interview.

The basic functions of the clinical interview: gathering information, giving information, educating, negotiating, building a relationship.

The motivational interview.

The interview with people suffering from depression.

The interview with anxious people.

The interview in complex situations: psychosis, personality disorder, agitated patient, hostile and non-collaborating patient, interfering family members.

Teaching methods

The module aims to be interdisciplinary and interactive. The lectures will then be characterized by the discussion of exemplary clinical cases with transcription of interviews and video-recorded instructional cases. Ample space will be given to exercises and role-playing.

Assessment methods

Test with 15 multiple choice quizzes distributed among all the topics covered in class. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, while the wrong answer does not give a score. The test is considered to have been passed with 9 correct answers.

Teaching tools

Presentations of the lessons in PowerPoint. Material provided during lectures and in-depth meetings. The material is available to students and can be downloaded from a dedicated online space.
