Learning outcomes

The module of this integrated course aims to provide the students specialistic knowledges regarding the diagnostic assesment and the therapeutic strategy of facial nerve paralysis. Moreover, it aims to present the physiopathologic principles that regulate the vestibular system completed with the presentation of the more significant balance disorders.

Course contents

1. Anatomy and physiopathology of the facial nerve. Instrumental semiotics.
2. Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis. Post-traumatic palsy. Otogenic, neoplastic and iatrogenic facial nerve paralysis.
3. Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome.
4. Rehabilitation.
5. Intraoperaive facial nerve monitoring.
6. Anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system.
7. Bedside examination: evaluation of spontaneous, evoked and provoked nystagmus.
8. Vestuibular neuronitis. Meniere's disease. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
9. Other causes of vertigo. Pediatric vertigo. Rehabilitation.



Readings/Bibliography

It is not necessary to purchase specialistic textbooks, even if they could be useful for consultation and deepen knowledges.
At the end of the course, students may access, through personal username and password, to the teaching material available at the proper link of the University of Bologna.

Teaching methods

Frontal presentation of the slides in PowerPoint format integrated by some representative videos.

Assessment methods

Idoneity at the end of the course if the student attended a sufficient number of hour lessons.

Teaching tools

Presentation of slides (Microsoft Office Power Point) and videos from PC on HD TV set as projector.
