40060 - POWER PLANTS AND DISTRIBUTED GENERATION M

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 8611)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Energy Engineering (cod. 0935)

Learning outcomes

The course examines various topics relevant to the operation and design of electric power stations, with particular reference to the dynamic behavior of synchronous machines, excitation systems, prime movers and energy supply systems and to the design of both the connection of power stations to the transmission grid and the design of the electric auxiliaries' system.

Course contents

  1. Dynamic models of synchronous machines. Electrical transient performance characteristics of synchronous machines. Protections.
  2. Excitation systems.
  3. Dynamic behavior of hydroelectric power plants. Hydraulic turbines and governing systems.
  4. Dynamic behavior of steam turbines and their governing systems. Steam generator transient behaviour. Gas turbines and combined-cycle units.
  5. Connection of power stations to the transmission grid and auxiliaries' system. Embedded generation.

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes in Italian are available at the web site https://iol.unibo.it/.

Assessment methods

Oral final exam (exam schedules at https://almaesami.unibo.it). The spoken exam at the end of the course aims at assessing the achievement of the learning objectives. The final grade is defined on the basis of the partial grades reported in three specific questions on topics related to the main contents of the course.
The achievement by the student of a complete knowledge of the course content and of its application to the solution of engineering problems, along with the use of the specific technical language, are assessed with marks of excellence. The mnemonic knowledge of the matter, with limited synthesis and analysis capabilities, and a language not always appropriate bring to discrete evaluations. Learning gaps and / or inappropriate language justify negative assessments or low marks.
