Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will have the basic knowledge of mathematics at university level that allow elementary applications in pharmaceutical sciences. In particular, students will be able to interpret and draw the graph of a function of one real variable; manipulate trigonometric functions, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions, use the basic tools of differential calculus, combinatorics and matrix.

Course contents

Fundamentals sets of numbers, sequences and series. Functions of one real variable, limits, continuity. Fundamental theorems of differential and integral calculus, graphs of functions, concept of primitive, techniques of integral calculus. Generalized integrals. Ordinary differential equations of first order. Outline of the differential calculus in two variables. Complex numbers.

Teaching methods

Lectures, in which primarily theoretical aspects of the topics are presented. In particular, after introducing the basics, there will be are sentences, and in some cases proven, the main theorems and results in the context of differential and integral calculus for functions of one real variable. Later on large space is dedicated to the applications of the concepts and techniques presented, and the resolution of exercises.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test of 2 hours and 30 minutes, during which it is permitted to use books, notes, calculators, electronic media, and an oral test. 

The exam consists of a written test with multiple-choice tests and / or exercises with open answer followed by an oral test that aims to verify the acquisition of the demonstrations presented in the course. The oral exam is only possible if the written test was passed with a minimum grade of 15/30. The final vote, out of thirty, takes account of estimates reported in both tests. The student may submit a written essay during the oral exam about chemistry and biological sciences that uses mathematical concepts learned during the course.
