34468 - Maintenance of Production Systems M

Academic Year 2018/2019

Learning outcomes

The course deals with the maintenance of a production system with a systemic and organic approach.
It presents models and methods to support failure analysis and policies following RAMS theories (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety).
Other topics are  Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Maintenance Global Service (GSM)

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of statistical distribution analysis (probability density function, cumulative function, etc) and integral calculation is required to attend with profit this course.

Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in Italian/English. In several cases book or other material can be in English.

Teaching methods

The course is structured in frontal lectures in which the basic elements of the various parts of the program are presented. Many lessons devoted to the resolution of exercises and specific problems follow theoretical presentations of each topic. That underline the applied nature of the discipline and aim to make it acquire the method, i.e. the ability to translate in mathematical language a concrete problem to determine its solution then applicable in industrial realities.

In the lectures some software will be used to analyze the reliability of complex components and systems and to manage information in a maintenance system so that complex quantitative methods can be applied to the design of the Maintenance service that is the main objective of the course.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of a final exam. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.

In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed of a written exam divided in 2 different sections: one based on numerical applications and the other based on theoretical questions. The duration is 3 hours.

To obtain a passing grade, students are required to at least demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, some ability for critical application, and a comprehensible use of technical language on maintenance of production systems.

Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject, a high ability for critical application, in particular to connect and merge the different parts of the course.

A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject, inappropriate use of language, and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject.

During the achievement is not possible the use of books, manuscripts, etc., and it is possible the use of scietific calculators not programmable.

Teaching tools

During the course, business visits and / or business testimonies are organized in the classroom to understand and discuss the problems related to the maintenance of the production systems most noticeable in industrial realities and consequently to understand the role of the techniques known during the lectures.
