37811 - Technologies for Sustainable Design II

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

This course provides the skills related to the energy efficiency of buildings, the application of renewable energy technologies (solar, geothermal, ...) integrated in the building and knowledge of systems and their performances in terms of energy efficiency. The student will be able to develop sufficient autonomy in his/her design choices concerning the building energy efficiency. In the design process, congruence between design choices, technological systems and solutions aimed at defining high performance integrated solutions is to be clear.

Course contents

The Sustainable Architecture Design Studio [16 CFU – 192 hours] embeds the following teaching modules:

- Sustainable Design Technologies I [2+2 CFU – 24+24 hours]

- Sustainable Design Technologies II [4 CFU – 48 hours]

- Energy performance evaluation [4 CFU – 48 hours]

- Sustainable Design [2 CFU – 24 hours]

- Energy Savings Design [2 CFU – 24 hours]

The core contents of the studio are addressed to energy efficient and sustainable architecture, aiming to control the process as whole in relation with boundary conditions and complex contexts.

Special attention will be paid to the design of low-energy-environmental-friendly architectures, able to couple excellent formal quality and coherence with high functional performances and comfort levels, by producing the minimum impact on the natural resources all along the building life cycle. The relationships between architectural issues, building process structure and technology options will be studied, booth theoretically and by  practical application on case-studies of new construction or retrofitting of existing buildings.

Readings/Bibliography

A list of recommended reading will provided as the Lab goes along

Teaching methods

Throughout the course, theoretical lessons and guided exercises are alternated. a series of periodic checks of the learning and of the progress level of the design exercise are planned. The development of the project is based on the re-elaboration and systematization of the aspects faced progressively in the laboratory and foresees the application of the simulation tools that have been learned

Assessment methods

The exam embeds the assessment of the contents of all the modules and teaching activities included in the design studio and consists in a unique evaluation.

Seminars and reviews are envisaged in order to assess the progress of the projects. Theoretical background and references are assessed during the courses according to technological choices that student are envisaging. The projects are the results of a progressive development and the final examination is based on a presentation of the findings and theoretical references as well as on the discussion of drawings and document produced.

The assessment will aim to ascertain that:

- the design solutions proposed  by the student are coherent and suitable with reference to the analysis carried out on the intervention site,

- student have acquired the knowledge needed to use SWs for climatic/energy analysis (at building and district scale) ant that he/she will be able to correctly interpretate the output produced by the SWs

Teaching tools

The students will have the free use of several software for modeling and assessment of both energy behavior and comfort performances of the building
