Learning outcomes
Objective of the course is to develop basic skills in the synthesis of organic compounds by modern synthetic methods. The student will be able to analyze and purify substances by liquid chromatography. The student will develop basic skills in the identification of simple organic compounds through combined NMR, MS, IR and UV spectra.
Course contents
Grade and safety information of organic reagents, solvents and commercial details. Reactions involving air and moisture sensitive reagents, Schlenk line and syringe techniques. Purification procedure of organic compounds by column chromatography. Acquire practice and techniques in organic synthesis by multistep synthesis.
Introduction to mass spettrometry for simple organic compounds, electron impact and electronspray spectra. Application of UV spectroscopy to organic chemistry. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: chemical shifts in H-1 and C-13 NMR for the main class of organic compounds. Spin systems and Pople notation, Karplus equation in H-1 NMR. Interpretation of spectroscopic data for the identification of simple organic compounds by NMR, IR and MS and UV combined spectra.

Teaching methods
Oral lectures supported by multimedia techniques. Laboratory sessions to improve experimental skills in organic synthesis and characterization. Training in the interpretation of laboratory data and in writing laboratory report will be arranged.
Assessment methods
To pass the exam a candidate must have a positive evaluation in three parts: laboratory reports, written test on the identification of a simple organic compound by combined H-1, C-13 NMR, IR, MS spectra, and a viva voce.
Teaching tools
Oral lectures ( 3 CFU, 24 hours) were supported by multimedia techniques. Laboratory sessions (3 CFU, 48 hours) to improve experimental skills will be in the organic synthesis laboratory of the department "G.Ciamician". Training in the interpretation spectra and in writing laboratory report will be arranged either in oral or laboratory sessions.
