- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)
Learning outcomes
The student acquires the fundamental knowledge on the electric,
magnetic, and optical properties of matter. He/she knows how to
solve simple problems related to these properties and knows the
foundation of quantum physics
Course contents
- Quantum physics. Quantization of energy. Corpuscular and wavelike aspects of matter. The foundation of quantum mechanics
- Electric properties: conduction in metals; semiconductors
- Magnetic properties: diamagnetism; paramagnetism; ferromagnetism
- Optical properties: electromagnetic waves on a dielectric and on a conductor
- Thermal properties: thermal capacity; conduction; expansion
- Liquid crystals: electric, magnetic and optical
properties

Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises in the lecture-hall.
The exercises carried out by the lecturer aim to consolidate the knowledge of the arguments treated, by means of specific quantitative examples.
Assessment methods
The final examination is for the evaluation of the student level of
learning of the arguments presented and of the student
understanding of the fundamental physical properties of
matter.
The grades are based on the quality of the answers given to several
questions/exercises posed during an oral or written
examination.
