Learning outcomes

Al termine del corso lo studente: - conosce e comprende le principali teorie sociologiche nel campo dell'inclusione e dell'esclusione sociale; - è in grado di distinguere le diverse dimensioni che caratterizzano le dinamiche di esclusione nel mondo globale: economica (connessa al disagio lavorativo e alla povertà), sociale (perdita di status e di capacità relazionale), culturale (isolamento da modelli di comportamento e valori socialmente riconosciuti), spaziale (fenomeni di marginalità urbana), istituzionale (incapacità di accedere all'istruzione, ai servizi e di partecipare alla vita pubblica); - sa individuare e analizzare con competenza alcune necessità socio-economiche e culturali fondamentali e caratteristiche dei processi di inclusione sociale sviluppati nei confronti dei soggetti e delle categorie a rischio esclusione; -è in grado di effettuare un'analisi dei bisogni finalizzata alla ideazione e alla valutazione degli interventi di politica sociale.

Course contents

The course offers the basic tools to understand and evaluate: 1. different contexts (economical, social, political, cultural) and levels (individual, familiar, collective) of the exclusion; 2. the social categories particularly exposed to dynamics of exclusion; 3. processes related to exclusion as causes or consequences (inequalities, discrimination, marginalization, etc.). The lectures will also take into account theoretical approaches and available data sources on exclusion. Moreover, the course will examine the main social policies aimed at promoting the process of inclusion, both on national and on global level in a comparative perspective.

In details, the course will focus on the following arguments: a) the concept of social exclusion and the sociological debate on exclusion; b) job market and exclusion; c) poverty and exclusion; d) the meaning of exclusion in the debate on welfare state; e) the institution of social control (prisons, asylums, immigration detention centers); f) exclusion and education system

Teaching methods

Face-to-face lessons based of presentations of slides and multimedial texts, seminars. During the course students will be invited to create groups and discuss on the suggested arguments.

Assessment methods

Attending students: a) a short paper on an argument defined during the course; b) discussion of the paper; c) oral examination (only 1 question)  

Non attending students: written examination on the arguments of the programme. The writted examination will consist in 8 opened questions. Erasmus students can agree with the teacher different dates and/or assessment methods (eg. oral exams). Contact the teacher.
