37188 - Histology and Embryology Laboratory (C2)

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5905)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is familiar in the laboratory with various methodological procedures, including histochemistry and immuno-histochemistry, suitable for the study of cellular and subcellular structures under the light microscope. In particular, the student is able to recognize the morphological aspects that allow the diagnosis of the various human tissues, in their peculiarities.

Course contents

Techniques for the preparation of histological preparations. Strategies for the recognition of tissues under an optical microscope: classification and differences of human tissues.
Tissues to study: Lining epithelium, Glandular epithelium, connective tissue, blood, lymphatic tissue, adipose tissue, bone tissue, cartilage tissue, muscle tissue, nervous tissue.

Readings/Bibliography

Any histology atlas can integrate the notions transmitted by the teacher. However, the use of the atlas is not imperative thanks to the tools provided online to assist the student.
Some examples:

- Atlante di Istologia e Anatomia microscopica, Ross - Pawlina - Barnash; Casa Editrice Ambrosiana editore.

- Wheater. Istologia e anatomia microscopica di Barbara Young, John W. Heath, Phillip Woodford ; Edra Masson editore

- Guida illustrata all'istologia di C. Rizzoli, M. Antonietta Brunelli, C. Castaldini - Piccin-Nuova Libraria editore

- Istologia. Atlante di Daniele Bani, Silvia Nistri, Gastone Bani - Idelson Gnocchi editore

Teaching methods

Projections of histological preparations in the classroom (at the Teaching Hub), with indication of the recognition strategies and histological stains used.

Microscopy exercises in the laboratory (at the Valsalva Pavilion - Morgagni Hospital), in groups of about 30 students, led by the teacher with the aim of concretely developing the ability to recognize histological preparations.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires all students of Modules 1 and 2 to carry out e-learning [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e -opportunities / health-and-assistance / health-and-safety / safety-and-health-in-study-places-and-internship] and participation in Module 3 of specific training on safety and in study places. Information on the date and method of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the section of the study program website.

Assessment methods

The assessment of the skills achieved is carried out through a practical test with the aid of an optical microscope (or alternative methods in case of limitations related to the COVID-19 emergency): it consists in the recognition and classification of the tissue (s) present in three histological preparations. The description of the elements that determined the recognition of the tissues is required, not the mere identification of the slide without motivation.

The result achieved in this course will be integrated with the result achieved in the other courses of the integrated course, finalizing a final mark (18-30) for the integrated course. Passing the test is an essential requirement to be able to record the other courses of the related integrated course. Passing the test of this course is valid within the current academic year (end of September) or for at least the next exam window within which the successful completion of the integrated course is required.
