Course contents

The course aims to deepen students' linguistic and cultural knowledge and translational skills for translation between Russian and Italian in the publishing area.

In particular, some topics will be examined:

the translation of low style juvenile vocabulary in literary works through the analysis of the Italian translation of Aleksej Ivanov's novel "The geographer drank the globe".

the characteristics of Russian children's literature texts translated into Italian.

the translation of journalism into Russian, in particular the translation of an article by A. Baricco and one by A. D'Avenia.

Journalistic translation into Italian of articles on topics related to culture.

The course includes the participation of external experts such as professional literary translators and experts in the field of children’s literature translation. Some of the classes will be held jointly with the students and the Russian-Italian translation lecturer from St. Petersburg State University. This will allow an in-depth analysis of the Russian and Italian source texts and a fruitful comparison of the translation choices.

Teaching methods

Student attendance is compulsory (at least 70%). The course includes both seminars and theoretical reflection. All students will be asked to participate in collective discussion, which will be a fundamental method to strengthen students' awareness of their skills. During classes, students will be asked to read, analyse and contextualize texts before starting the translation process.

Translation techniques will be discussed from the point of view of strategies to be applied to produce good quality 'translation' aimed at a specific target readership.

Working along with Russian speaking students will allow a fruitful discussion on the translation choices.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist of a translation task to be delivered to the teacher as individual work. The translation should be prepared at home and submitted by e-mail (francesca.biagini7@unibo.it). The text (approximately 500 words) will be made available on the Virtuale e-learning platform about a week before the hand-in date.

The mark of the examination is expressed out of thirty - the pass markis 18/30 and the highest mark is 30/30, according to the ECTS Grading Scale:

A [≈ 30/30 – 30/30 e lode]: outstanding performance with only minor errors;
