  • Docente: Michela Marcatelli
  • Credits: 4
  • Language: Italian

Learning outcomes

The workshops are designed to provide students with skills that can prove useful in their future careers. The objective of the workshop is to help students advancing their skills through practice exercises in informational technology, data analysis, analysis in decision-making techniques (e.g. simulation) in complex organizations.

Course contents

The laboratorio will be structured in two parts.

The first part provides students with critical analytical tools necessary to contextualize international development cooperation projects. It will therefore introduce and discuss several concepts, theories, and approaches, such as:

· Global development and 'Beyond aid'

· New actors in development cooperation ('emerging donors'; the private sectors; celebrities)

· South-South Cooperation

· The financial architecture of development

· Project evaluation models (Randomized Control Trials; Theory-based approaches)

In the second part of the laboratorio, students will have to present and analyse case studies (such as development cooperation projects implemented by national, international, and non-governmental organizations) in class and taking into account what was discussed in the first part.

More detailed instructions on student presentations will be provided at the start of the laboratorio, also in light of the number of participants.

Readings/Bibliography

A list of required readings will be provided in class.

Teaching methods

The first part of the laboratorio will consist of standard lectures with some interactive elements. Students are therefore expected to do the readings before coming to class.

The second part of the laboratorio will consist of oral presentations (supported by slides) by students.

Assessment methods

Students' active participation in class and their presentations will determine whether or not they will qualify to pass the laboratorio.

Non-attending students need to contact the lecturer to make arrangements for an oral exam.

Teaching tools

Lecture slides, documents and websites concerning international development cooperation.
