Learning outcomes

In this "age of analysis"-to use an effective expression of Morton White people tend to prefer working method in the classification, which most often fails to act as a suitable instrument to deal with contingencies created by the complex contemporary society. This limit is overridden by the need for recourse to the project, understood as a set of basic operations, which in this case the project of architecture has its foundation in the rules of architectural composition. Purpose of the course is to lead the student to the identification of those techniques useful for maturing the critical capacity building of architectural design, based on the inseparable duo of theory and practice, in which converge-adjustable, coherent organization, elements of type conceptual, expressive, technical and constructive.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts: a series of theoretical lectures held by professors of the courses and hold a series of workshops for revision and submission of progress of the drawings produced by students.
In considering the architecture of the synthesis of a cultural process from the value of permanence of certain "archetypal forms" and not a natural process of description and representation of the needs that arise, the course program is founded on the belief that the project needs a cognitive work, in which the study of theory and the work of some master is defined as a prerequisite for the understanding of contemporary thought. Thus becomes necessary in the formation of a conceptual process a teaching staff of the architecture based on the use of "forms" and "types" handed down by history, that "already" considered to be in his uniform size either as a set of parts analyzed by specific components, arranged according to a specific order dictated by the rules of composition. Laboratory work, placing the emphasis on typological and formal aspects of the project, focus will therefore inevitably the study of selected works of architecture, defining the cultural horizons through knowledge of theories of composition that created them.

Assessment methods

The assessment exam will depend on the quality of the exercises and the discussion of the topics covered during lectures, with references to the bibliography of the course. In addition to the design and techniques of representation, special importance will be given by the student with the ability to use an appropriate and correct terminology, discipline, or during the exhibition of their work, both through the development of written texts.
