  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Medical Biotechnology (cod. 9081)

Learning outcomes

The course will be held by Dr Arianna Aceti and Dr Riccardo Masetti

The course aims to make the student aware of the diversity existing, on the patho-physiological level, between the developing subject and the adult individual. The main physiological and pathological issues related to the developing age will be covered. At the end of the course, the student will reach an extensive knowledge of the biological background of the most important pediatric diseases and physiological processes that characterize this period of life.

Course contents

- The neonatal period: definitions and classification

- Neonatal health and disease: what a biotechnologist needs to know

- The role of human milk beyond nutrition

Teaching methods

Classical teaching modalities with virtual reproduction of emblematic clinical cases with direct participation by students

Assessment methods

Oral examination

For the oral test, the candidate will be asked to prepare the topics covered in class as per the above program.

The end-of-course exam aims to assess the achievement of the following educational objectives:

- Knowledge of the basic principles of pediatrics in the aspects relating to history, age of life, prevention and communication to the pediatric patient.

- Knowledge of the basic principles of neonatal medicine, with specific regard to neonatal biology, human milk feeding, neonatal screening and the emerging role of microbiota in neonatal health and disease

- Knowledge of the biological background of the most important pediatric syndromes, tumors and developing diseases.

- Knowledge of the biological background of vaccination and immunological development
