88016 - Statistics (M-Z)

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Moduli: Saverio Ranciati (Modulo 1) Valentina Sansivieri (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in International relations and diplomatic affairs (cod. 8048)

Learning outcomes

The aim is to lead the student in learning the basic statistical notion. The first theoretical part introducing the basic statistics, is followed to an application part with practical exercises.

Course contents

Descriptive statistics

The statistics surveys and their phases. The scales measurement of the phenomena. Frequency distributions. Graphical representation. Mean, median, mode. The variability. Concentration and its measure. The statistical ratios. Simple and composed indices. Descriptive Statistics: Bivariate data. The covariance. Correlation and regression.

Statistical inference

Introduction to the probabilities. Random variables. Probability distributions. The sample design. Propriety of estimators. Confidence intervals. Testing Hypotheses. The linear regression model.

Teaching methods

The methods are based on theoretical and practical parts in order to learn the basic statistical notion for data analysis. A tutor helps students in practical exercises.

Assessment methods

There are 2 partial tests during the Statistics course, one for each of part of the course (descriptive statistics and inferential statistics); the partial test is 45 minutes long and involves multiple choice questions. Course material and the referenced book can be consulted during the exam.

To pass the exam the student score has to be greater than or equal to 18/30 in the full examination and in partial tests (for attending students) the average score has to be not less then 18/30, and both partial tests should have at least a score of 15/30.

Otherwise, it is possible to do only one full test in the ordinary examination session. In that case, the full test is 120 minutes long and contains both multiple choice questions and pratical excercises with theoretical questions.
