Learning outcomes

Students achieve general knowledge about buildings and constructions for breeding. In particular students are able to take part in executive design and to follow works during construction phases. At the end of the course the student can elaborate preliminary design of breeding buildings and tanks and partecipate to works direction.

Part 1 : HYDRAULICS

Physical characteristics of fluids. Ideal fluids. Hydrostatics. Pressure. Hydrodynamics: Ctreams. Continuity. Hydraulics energy. Fluid motion in free surface channels. Fluid motion in pressure conduits. Water lifting machines. Pumping plants. Instruments and methods for hydraulic measurements. Water control works. Embankments and soil walls. Inflow and outflow on water course

Part 2 : CONSTRUCTIONS & PLANTS FOR BREEDING

Site choice: Climatic, morphological, hydrologic, and economic conditions. Water supplying: Catching from deep water, from internal surface waters, from transition waters and from coastal seawater. Quality control at ingoing plant. Resource availability and hydraulic balance: juridical and administrative aspects. In shore aquaculture plants: Pumping and catching works. Shape and profiles of tanks. Diffusers and partition works. Light materials for tanks construction. Ground tanks. Concrete tanks. Foundations and soil pressures. Covers. Extensive and intensive schemes, open or recirculation flows. Service structures. Mass balance and tank control: Hydraulic control parameters. Geometric characteristics, incoming and outgoing flow. Mass and energy balance. Transport. diffusion. settling. Water conditioning of fish culture tanks: Oxygen balance. Natural oxygenation. Internal consumption. Debris removal. Artificial oxygenation plants.  Aquaculture inside coastal lagoons: Hydraulic exchange and tidal water depth. Flow and channels distributions. Storage and winter basin. Ancient and modern works of fish selection and catching. Off shore plants: Floating and sinking cages. Anchorage. Food giving and fish catching. Signals and garrison.

Part 3 : CONSTRUCTIONS & PLANTS FOR WATER TREATMENT

Wastewater treatment: Technical laws. Industrial, agricultural and domestic discharge. Hygiene Municipal Regulations. Water outfall discipline. Wastewater reuse regulations. Kinetics and biochemistry of bacterial and algal biomass. Growth and death in suspended and attached biomasses. Raw and fine screens. Sand removal. Primary sedimentation. Biodegradability and biological phases for secondary treatment. Oxidization and nitrification. Secondary sedimentation. Phosphorous and nitrogen removal. Active sludge scheme without ad with recirculation. Disinfection techniques. Sludge management. Sand filtration. Natural system for wastewater treatment and finishing ex D.Lgs 152/2006.

Preliminary design (developed during time of exercise): Distribution planning. Materials. Performing particulars.

Teaching methods

° Room lessons ad exercise hours are coupled with single assistance in analyzing an intensive aquacolture plant and an existing treatment plant design

° During the course the students are assisted to prepare a personal paper about a project or a functional study regarding a complete aquacolture plant.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of an oral final examination. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.

In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed of three questions, each related to one of three main parts of the course program: Hydraulics, Constructions and plants for breeding, Construction and plants for water treatment.

To obtain a passing grade, students must demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject and a comprehensible use of technical Language.

Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject and a good ability for critical application.

Failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts and logic failures in the analysis of the subject.

Teaching tools

Each student receives:

a) slides and projected files used during room lessons

b) an harvest of existing technical laws, in Italy, about outfall regulation, treatment and reuse of wastewater
