At the end of the course held by prof. Piscaglia the student will know 

- the methodological basis of the clinical reasons to diagnose the most common syndromes of the elderly, the slowly evolutionary systemic diseases, the relevance and types of comorbidities.

- will be able to apply the principles of differential diagnosis  and establish prognosis for the most severe and prevalent disease in the aged population

- will be able to assess the health conditions of the elders as patient and as persons, as part of specific contexts (home, hospital, almhouse, RSA). 

- will be able to communicate with the elder, the relatives, the enviroment and the health professionals, in particular on the topics of death, suffering and decadence.

- will know the indications and contraindications of the main diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, even invasive ones, in adults, elder and over80's

- will be able to plan therapeutic strategies, including preventive, rehabilitative and therapeutical strategies for the most common geriatric syndromes according to the international guidelines

PROGRAM OF THE COURSE  MODULE HELD BY PROF. PISCAGLIA (non all topics will likely be delivered during the lessons due to time contrainsts and some are partially held by the course module held by prof. Bianchi)

1. Basic principles of EKG and pattern of normal traces. How to acquire and read an EKG. Main EKG abnrmalities in the elders. (atrial fibrillation, bundle blocks, main supraentricular arrythmias, atrioventricular blocks, ischemic abnormalities)

Epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic assessment, differential diagnosis, complications and treatment of

2. Atrial Fibrillantion and other common arrhytmias of the elders

3. Cerebral ischemia

4. Cardiac failure and valvular disease

5. Venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. (including magement of anticoagulants)

6. Arterial hypertension

7. Osteoporosis

8. Diabetes mellitus, long and short term complication and treatment.

9. Dehydration. Anormalities of the serum electrolites

11. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
