Learning outcomes

The student - knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks - is able to apply them to the translation of technical and scientific texts from different genres and text types, from German into Italian, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts - knows the main techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text

Course contents

This course focuses on the translation and revision of specialized German texts belonging to technical-scientific domains (mainly economic, medical, technological and legal). The quality levels required are explicitly defined for each text to be treated, with reference to scenarios of actual use at a professional level.

Main activities to be carried out are:

  • contextualization of the source text;
  • genre analysis;
  • documentation from authoritative sources and selection of relevant terminology;
  • use or creation of resources (translation memories, glossaries, corpora);
  • use of CAT tools and machine translation applications;
  • individual and cooperative post editing.

Teaching methods

During teaching hours, approximately 10 translation tasks are assigned, analysed, planned and evaluated, spread over different thematic and professional areas. For each hour of teaching there are about two hours of individual or group work, to be done regularly with regular deadlines.
Each task is analysed and framed collectively, in order to establish strategies and of resources for optimal performance. Each participant shall provide an individual version within the deadline. The supplied versions are then discussed and optimised collectively.

Assessment methods

An intermediate test examination(in the second half of the half-year) and a final examination are planned. In both, students individually perform translations in a laboratory (length: 350 to 600 words, available time: 2 hours), using all the resources made available in the course. For translations to be carried out, the fruition context to be kept in mind is indicated.

Assessment is based on the linguistic, stylistic and communicative quality of the texts produced, together with the degree of equivalence and adequacy achieved.

Marks range from 1 to 30 and are linked to marks obtained in 82043 Specialized Translation from Italian into German. Their average is the official mark for 82041 Specialized Translation Between German and Italian (I.C.).

Teaching tools

The course takes place in specially equipped classrooms, and involves the use of advanced tools, in coordination with the course of methods and technologies for translation. It also includes the use of research tools, applications, databases and corpora specifically designed for the issues to be addressed.
All tools and materials to be used are listed and made available on the Moodle platform. Students need to register and are expected to use the Moodle communication channels.
