Academic Year 2018/2019

Learning outcomes

The student develops an individual design project of a simple r.c. precast-beam bridge. To this purpose, during the course, the design and dimensioning criteria of a girder bridge deck and of the corresponding substructures are studied; numerical and graphical applications are then required.

Course contents

1. THE DESIGN OF A PRECAST-BEAM BRIDGE
Characteristics of the design project
Elements of road geometry
The transversal cross-section of the bridge deck
The crash barriers

2. DESIGN CRITERIA OF THE BRIDGE DECK
The general approach of the design
The slab design
Simplified analysis for the transversal load distribution

3. PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
History, development and general principles of prestressed concrete structures
Prestressing technologies (bonded and unbounded tendons, pre-tensioning and post-tensioning systems)
Codes
Determination of the internal forces
Flexure and shear
Loss of prestress
End anchorages and local verifications

4. THE CALCULATION OF THE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS
The loads
The stages of loading
Dimensioning and verification of the prestressed concrete beams

5. BEARING DEVICES AND DECK JOINTS

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons mainly at the blackboard (occasional use of Power-Point slides).
Numerical applicative examples at the blackboard.
Revision of the individidual design projects developed by the students with the help of a tutor.

Assessment methods

Assessment of the individual design project (of a precast-beam bridge) developed by the student.
This assessment consists in:
1. examination of the technical drawings
2. analysis of the technical report
3. calculation and design criteria and technical drawings of the construtive details
The oral test is aimed at checking if the student is able to apply the theoretical aspects in a specific applicative example of bridge design.

Teaching tools

Possible lecture-notes supplied by the teacher.
Power-Point presentations.
