Learning outcomes

After completing this module, the student gets basic knowledges of the physical features of sound wave and physiological mechanisms of its transmission and perception; he knows the pathophysiology and the principles of diagnosis and therapy of tthe main otologic diseases that may influence the verbal communication.

Course contents

Anatomy and physiology of the ear. Instrumental semiotics. Tone and speech audiometry; classification of hearing loss. Diagnosis and therapy of the major diseases of the external, middle and internal ear. Childhood deafness; causes, newborn screening, diagnostics (otoacoustic emissions, brainstem evoked potentials, behavioral audiometry). Hearing aids and cochlear implants.
