Learning outcomes

The main topics relating the design of the structural systems aimed at the stability of buildings are studied: direct and indirect actions, restraints, analytical models, evaluation of the structural safety through probabilistic approaches; design and construction criteria; loading tests; code for structural design. In particular, at the end of the course, the student is able to determine the safety level of different structural systems, with particular reference to those of historical buildings.

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of the concepts of structural mechanics and construction techniques is required to attend with profit this course. In particular, the student should be really conversant with structural design.

This knowledge is usually acquired by passing the exams of Scienza delle Costruzioni T (Structural Mechanics) and Tecnica delle Costruzioni T (Construction Techniques).

Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study materials will be in Italian.

Course Contents

The course is organized in three modules: the first two modules consist of 10 credits, the third of 2 credits.

1) Design issues and security assessment methods.

2) Structural analysis: the equilibrium method. Elements of matrix analysis of structures.

3) The limit state method for the verification of the structural elements.

4) Elements of foundation technique: shallow foundations, deep foundations.

5) Elements of structural dynamics: the dynamics of systems with one degree of freedom, the dynamics of systems with several degrees of freedom.

6) General criteria for the seismic design: performance objectives, definition of the seismic design spectra, structural conception, methods of analysis.

7) Seismic design of reinforced concrete structures: ductility of reinforced concrete elements, capacity design, design criteria and construction details of beams, columns, walls and joints.

8) The existing buildings: structural systems and criteria for the evaluation of the safety level.

9) Innovative methodologies for the antiseismic protection of structures.

The first two modules are relative to all topics except the n. 4, illustrated in the third. The course includes exercises regarding the design and dimensioning of building structures.

Teaching methods

The course is characterized by frontal lessons at the blackboard and with power-point slides.

Assessment methods

The exam inlcudes the learning assessment of the contents of all modules and takes place in a single exam.

The learning assessment is carried out through the development of a design application and an oral final exam, aimed at evaluating the achievement of the requested knowledge. The oral examination consists normally of three questions that concern: calculation of frame structures, theoretical questions concerning the course program, design and verification criteria of structural elements, nalysis and design of structures and interventions in seismic areas, discussion of the design application.

To obtain a passing grade, students are required to at least to demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject and some ability for critical application. A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject.
