Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will know and apply the tools for statistical data analysis in the field of sociology and social service and will  able to gather information and apply common statistical analysis techniques  

Course contents

Introduction to statistical logic and to statistical analysis of the data. Official sources of social statistics. Statistical analysis of the data. Variables and types of statistical variables. Statistical units, population and sample. Collection, arrangement, and arrays of data. Frequency distributions and graphical representations. The univariate analysis: measures of central tendency and diversity. The bivariate analysis: measures of association and regression. Evaluation effect and social experiments .

In general, the topics indicated represent the basic tools for evaluating the world around us, when we want to transform data into decisions, considering the effects and approximations that derive from the case.

Assessment methods

The final examination for all students, consists of a written test with exercises to be solved, and multiple choice questions. For the written test, calculator is allowed but it is NOT allowed  books or notes. Some help  notes will be provided by the teacher  (available also on the teaching learning material).

The course of SOCIAL STATISTICS follows the course of METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, held by Prof. Paola Bordandini, and together they make up the integrated course METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND SOCIAL STATISTICS.

The final mark of the Integrated Course is unique, is verbalized by prof. Paola Bordandini and is given by the average of the two grades (rounded up if the voting fraction is 0.5 or more) obtained in the two single exams.
